Focus on Families

This fall the Catholic Church will hold two significant events that highlight the need to celebrate and support the diverse expressions and needs of families around the world:

The World Meeting of Families

September 22-25, 2015

Philadelphia, PA

The World Meeting of Families is held every three years and sponsored by the Holy See’s Pontifical Council for the Family.   Since its inception by Saint John Paul II in 1994, the World Meeting of Families has strengthened the sacred bonds of families across the globe.  At the conference, families share their thoughts, dialogue and prayers, working together to grow as individuals and family units.  The theme of the World Meeting of Families – Philadelphia 2015 is “Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive,” emphasizing the impact of the love and life of families on our society. This year’s World Meeting of Families will conclude with a visit from Pope Francis, who will participate in a Festival of Families and preside at an outdoor Mass.

The Synod of Bishops on the Family

October 4-25, 2015

Vatican City, Italy

The Synod is an assembly of bishops from around the world who assist the Holy Father by providing counsel on important questions facing the Church in a manner that preserves the Church's teaching and strengthens her internal discipline.  The Synod of Bishops is a permanent institution of the Catholic Church. It was established by Pope Paul VI in 1965, shortly after the close of the Second Vatican Council, to continue the spirit of collegiality and communion that was present at the Council.  This year Pope Francis will convene the XIV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, with the theme:  "The vocation and mission of the family in the Church and in the contemporary world."  This synod will continue the work of the Extraordinary General Assembly that met last fall to begin conversations on this topic.  Archbishop Cupich has been appointed by Pope Francis as a participant in the Synod, along with 7 other American prelates able to vote.
